Summary

Junior High School 144 Michelangelo is a public middle school located in the Bronx, New York, serving grades 6-8 with a student population of 398. The school is part of the New York City Geographic District #11, which is ranked 627 out of 874 districts in the state.

While Junior High School 144 Michelangelo has consistently ranked in the bottom half of New York middle schools over the past 10 years, the school performs better in certain subject areas, such as Regents exams. In 2024-2025, the school had higher proficiency rates than the district in Common Core ELA (71.88% vs. 60.17%) and U.S. History and Government (70% vs. 51.91%). However, the school's overall performance on state assessments is generally below the district and state averages, with proficiency rates of 42.86% in ELA and 34.29% in Math for 6th grade, compared to 44.03% and 39.64% for the district, and 50.86% and 51.2% for the state.

Compared to nearby schools in the same district, Junior High School 144 Michelangelo generally performs better than Baychester Middle School and Cornerstone Academy for Social Action Middle School, but lags behind schools like IS 181 Pablo Casals and Bronx Park Middle School. The school's high per-student spending of $37,358 in 2023-2024 and relatively small class sizes, with a student-teacher ratio of 12.7, suggest that it has access to resources, but the inconsistent performance across subjects and grade levels indicates a need to address these disparities and develop more consistent, effective strategies for supporting student learning.

Open Quote My child goes to this school I consider it a terrible school because they don't really know what is going around in the school my daughter says that everyone in her class never pays attention in class the students disrespect the teachers and disturb the class plus the students be walking around the hallways skipping/cutting class while others students yell at the teachers brake the books and calculator my child is terrified everyday when she goes to this school because of the big bad behavior going around in this school so if you are whiling to put your child in this school don't send them to this school do your child a favor and find a better school. By the way the lunch food is just disgusting my child never eats the school lunch or else she will get sick from the stomach. There are fights between the students everyday sometimes during lunch and most of it is when they come out of the school. Close Quote
