Summary

Eugenio Maria De Hostos Charter School is an alternative public charter school located in Rochester, New York, serving grades K-12 with a total enrollment of 1,035 students. The school has faced challenges in recent years, with fluctuations in its four-year graduation rate and dropout rate, as well as persistent issues with chronic absenteeism.

Academically, Eugenio Maria De Hostos Charter School's performance, as measured by state assessments and Regents exams, is significantly lower than the state averages across most grade levels and subject areas. For example, in the 2024-2025 school year, the school's proficiency rates in English Language Arts ranged from 14.61% to 29.59%, compared to the state average of 50.86% to 56.61%. In mathematics, the school's proficiency rates ranged from 5.15% to 33.33%, compared to the state average of 46.74% to 59.7%. The school's high percentage of students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds, with 80.1% qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch, suggests that the school serves a population with greater educational and social needs. While the school's spending per student has been relatively high, ranging from $13,166 to $16,677 in recent years, this higher spending does not appear to have translated into improved academic outcomes for the students.

When compared to nearby schools, such as Rochester Prep Charter School 1, which is located just a few miles away, Eugenio Maria De Hostos Charter School generally underperforms academically. The school's high chronic absenteeism rates, ranging from 31.5% to 70.6%, are a major concern and likely contribute to the school's overall academic challenges. Addressing this issue, as well as ensuring that students remain engaged and on track to graduate, should be a top priority for the school's administration.

Open Quote Eugenio Maria de Hostos is a school that serves the needs of it's community. They provide resources to families as well as students. Their curriculum includes enrichment activities. And they will be expanding into a high school (which is fantastic for families like mine with multiple children, as it means all of my children will be able to attend a school where we have already established relationships with the staff, and make my involvement easier and less transitions necessary for the students, as well as helping to maintain community).
