Summary

Hidden Valley Elementary is a public elementary school in Reno, Nevada, serving 228 students in grades PK-5. The school is part of the Washoe County School District, which is ranked 4 out of 12 in the state and has a 4-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Over the years, Hidden Valley Elementary has seen fluctuations in its statewide ranking, ranging from 94th to 226th out of 324-388 Nevada elementary schools, and its SchoolDigger rating has varied from 2 to 4 stars. Compared to nearby schools, it generally performs better than Robert Mitchell Elementary and Lincoln Park Elementary, but lags behind the higher-performing schools like Lloyd Diedrichsen Elementary and Nick Poulakidas Elementary School. The school's proficiency rates in mathematics and science are generally lower than the district and state averages, while its reading proficiency rates are closer to, but still behind, the averages.

A concerning trend at Hidden Valley Elementary is its high chronic absenteeism rates, ranging from 14.8% to 28.1% in recent years. This is likely a contributing factor to the school's academic challenges, as chronic absenteeism can have a significant impact on student learning and achievement. Additionally, the school has a high percentage of students from low socioeconomic backgrounds, with 100% of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch in recent years. Addressing the root causes of chronic absenteeism and providing additional resources and support for these students could be crucial in helping Hidden Valley Elementary improve its overall performance and better serve its diverse student population.

Open Quote Bad behavior in every grade even the kindergarteners, teachers do nothing to stop this and let it slide, vandalism, profanity, VAPING, etc. The kids dont know what respect is and treat the bus drivers/teachers awfully. I do NOT recommend letting your child come to this school. Close Quote

Open Quote I gave it two stars simply because the principal and school counselor where so nice. I don't really know how they measure up compared to other schools here but our experience was horrendous. Rather than working with our child and accommodating some special needs, the teacher let it spiral out of control, letting the frustration build to a point were she simply labeled our child incorrigible. I was working with my child every day for hours, trying to teach and explain the lessons so that the homework could be completed. This was not being done at school, it seemed that the information was presented but no real "teaching" came after that. In addition, all of the things we used and techniques we used to cope with stress, achieve focus, and prevent sensory overload, were taken away. We were told those are all just excuses. I tried numerous times via e-mail to work with the teacher and come up with a plan. We were just told that, (our child), was "expected to do this level of work" and that, (our child), needed to try harder to focus. We had two substitute teachers who did a wonderful job and actually helped explain and teach the lessons and our child responded very well to this, so we know it can be done, just as we had seen when our child attended school in a different country. Another thing that was unacceptable was that more often than not, they were late getting to the lunch room and by the time they could sit down and eat, they only had a few minutes. Many children are not given enough time to finish lunch without stuffing it all into their mouths at once. I would ask over and over again, "Why is most of your lunch still in the box." and the same answer was given. Our child was famished by the time we arrived home after school. We pulled our child out of this school and even now, after we are gone, our child sees friends from the class and they have said, "We asked Mrs. (our child's teacher) why she was so mean to you and she told us that you were lazy." Hearing this was devastating to our child. This experience has left our child feeling like a failure and having very low self esteem. We have had to work very hard to undo the damage that was done by this teacher. We felt that it was not a healthy environment either physically or mentally for our child. There is much more to this story but I will spare the details. Here is an article this school as well as others might consider:
