Edwin S. Dodson Elementary

Summary:

Edwin S. Dodson Elementary is a public elementary school in Reno, Nevada, serving 235 students in grades PK-5. The school is part of the Washoe County School District, which is ranked 4 out of 12 in the state and has a 4-star rating from SchoolDigger.

While Edwin S. Dodson Elementary has a significantly higher Hispanic student population (51.49%) compared to nearby schools, its academic performance, as measured by SBAC proficiency rates, is generally lower than the district and state averages across all grades and subjects. The school's statewide ranking has fluctuated over the years, ranging from 139 out of 324 Nevada elementary schools in 2020-2021 (rated 3 stars) to 222 out of 384 in 2022-2023 (rated 2 stars), placing it in the bottom half of Nevada elementary schools. Additionally, the school's student subgroups, such as Hispanic and English Language Learner students, generally perform below their peers at the state level.

Despite the relatively high spending per student at Edwin S. Dodson Elementary ($13,675 in 2020-2021), the school's academic performance remains below the district and state averages. This is in contrast to higher-performing nearby schools like Hidden Valley Elementary and Coral Academy Elementary-South, which have stronger academic outcomes. The consistent low performance and achievement gaps among student subgroups at Edwin S. Dodson Elementary suggest the need for targeted interventions and a closer examination of resource allocation to improve student learning.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote The school is under appreciated, and could use some funding to bring up its appearance. It has a great staff, save for two people in the office who have questionable attitudes and would be better suited working away from kids. The attitude of students is overwhelmingly positive. One leaves the school with a good vibe, and the love and dedication of the students and teachers makes for a happy and nurturing environment. I really like Dodson for my family. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
