Summary

George Whittell High School is a small public school in Zephyr Cove, on the Nevada side of Lake Tahoe, serving 139 students in grades 6–12 as part of the Douglas district. In 2025–2026 it ranked 28th of 105 Nevada high schools (73rd percentile, 4 stars), and its 2024–2025 graduation rate of 91.6% was above the district's 85.9% and the state's 85.4%.

Science and reading are the school's clearest strengths. In 2025–2026, schoolwide SBAC proficiency was above district and state in all three tested subjects: Mathematics 42.4%, Reading 57.5%, and Science 48.0%. Its End-of-Course Science result of 53.5% was well above Douglas High School (34.9%), Incline High School (49.2%), and the state (26.5%). The school is also unusually well resourced, with $28,390 spent per student in 2023–2024 and a 5.6 student-teacher ratio in 2024–2025, far below Douglas High (20) and Incline High (12.9). Because it is small and spans middle school grades, year-to-year scores can swing more than at larger schools, and some results are not reported.

The main concern is attendance: in 2025–2026, 29.8% of students were chronically absent, above the district's 19.2%, the state's 25.5%, Douglas High's 22.8%, and Incline High's 21.6%. After improving to 24.6% in 2024–2025, the rate rose again. College-ready measures are more mixed — 11th-grade ACT English was 52.1%, below Douglas High (59.3%) and Incline High (73.0%), and the school's ACT Math figure was suppressed by the state. Incline High is the stronger nearby benchmark overall (13th of 105, 88th percentile, 4 stars), while Douglas High posts a similar graduation rate (91.3%) at $12,274 per student and a 20-to-1 ratio. ASPIRE Academy High School serves a very different population and is not a direct academic peer.
