Tucumcari Middle

Tucumcari Middle is a grades 6–8 school at 1000 South 5th St in Tucumcari, New Mexico, enrolling 213 students as part of Tucumcari Public Schools; because there are no other schools within 20 miles, it is effectively the only middle school option for families in this rural area. Nearly every student qualifies for free or reduced-price lunch (99.53% in 2024-2025, 100% the two years before), and the district itself ranks 59th of 87 New Mexico districts. In 2025-2026 the school ranked 125th of 191 ranked state middle schools — 35th percentile, 2 stars — down from 3 stars and the mid-60s percentile just two years earlier.

The school's clearest split is between reading and math. Language arts sits roughly at the state level (41.67% versus 43.34% combined), while math proficiency is 14.22% against a state rate of 25.54% — about one in seven students proficient instead of one in four. Math has slid from slightly above state in 2022-2023 to roughly half the state rate now, and it is below state in all three grades. At the same time, female students have fallen to the 24th percentile (1 star) while male students rank 62nd percentile, a wide internal gap that appeared over the last two years.
