Summary

Taos High is the large comprehensive public high school serving grades 9–12 in Taos, New Mexico, with 749 students — roughly three times the size of the next-largest campus in its local comparison group — and a student body in which nearly every family qualifies for free or reduced-price lunch.

Academically, the school sits close to the middle of the New Mexico pack, with clear strengths and one clear weakness. Eleventh-grade English language arts is above the state (39.42% proficient versus 36.78%), and science is a standout: 39.1% proficient versus 34.02% statewide, and 40.31% on the state science exam versus 34.27%. Math, however, trails the state (11.68% versus 12.72%) — an unusual split, since math and science usually move together. For comparison, Taos Academy posts much higher results, including 56.25% in 11th-grade ELA, but it enrolls about 251 students with roughly one-third low-income, while nearby Penasco High and Vista Grande High School share Taos High's near-universal poverty yet are far smaller.

The biggest concern is on-time graduation: 70.9% in 2024–25 versus 80.6% statewide, and the rate has stayed between 69% and 72% for five straight years. Penasco High and Vista Grande High School both report 84.0%, showing that better results are achievable in similar circumstances. On a positive note, Taos High's low-income students now rank in the 73rd percentile with 4 stars statewide, up sharply over two years. Some nearby schools' results are suppressed or reported only as bounds — Moreno Valley Preparatory's math is under 20%, and its science and ELA are at least 80% — so the local picture remains incomplete.
