Summary

Nina Otero Community School is a PK–8 school in Santa Fe, New Mexico, serving 629 students on Herrera Drive as part of Santa Fe Public Schools. For most of the past decade it has ranked in the bottom quartile or bottom decile of New Mexico elementary/middle schools, briefly improved to the 38th–39th percentile in 2023–24 and 2024–25, then fell to the 15th percentile in 2025–26 — below its own district’s 36th-percentile standing.

In 2025–26, proficiency trails district and state in every subject: language arts 35.15% vs. 41.11% district and 43.34% state; math 15.20% vs. 23.53% and 25.54%; science 17.27% vs. 29.39% and 33.40%. Math and science are roughly three-fifths of district norms and weaken by grade level, with 8th-grade math under 10%. Science also dropped from 25% to 17.39% while the district fell only about 3.3 points. Nearby, Pinon Elementary — same district, same 100% free/reduced lunch, slightly worse student–teacher ratio, 2.68 miles away — posts 51.84% ELA and 32.35% math, showing what comparable local schools can produce. Meanwhile Francis X. Nava Elementary, Chaparral Elementary, and E.J. Martinez Elementary held or improved while Nina Otero declined.

Nina Otero is the strongest school among its three closest neighbors: Cesar Chavez Elementary, R.M. Sweeney Elementary, and El Camino Real Academy Community all post lower math proficiency, and El Camino Real sits at the 1st percentile statewide. Class size is not the issue — its 13.4 student–teacher ratio is smaller than Pinon Elementary's. The clearest bright spots are 4th- and 7th-grade ELA near district parity, and English language learners reached the 51st percentile in 2023–24. The most persistent concern is special education, which has ranked in the bottom decile for three straight years. Poverty is shared across these schools, so it does not explain the gap with higher-performing neighbors.
