Valencia Elementary

Valencia Elementary is the grades 3–4 school in Portales Municipal Schools in Portales, New Mexico, serving 366 students at 1415 South Globe — the largest of the district's three elementaries in this comparison set. Portales uses a banded structure: Brown Early Childhood Center (PK–K), James Elementary (1–2), and Valencia (3–4). Because Valencia is the only district school that sits for the grade 3 and 4 state tests, its scores and the district's grade 3/4 scores are identical, so the most useful comparisons come from nearby Clovis, Dora, and Floyd schools.

Reading is Valencia's real strength. Its 49.7% ELA proficiency is the highest in the comparison set except Dora and beats the state by about 6 points. Math is a different story: at 27.5% it is only about 2 points above the state and essentially level with New Mexico on the state test. Valencia's math proficiency is roughly double that of the weakest nearby schools, including James Bickley Elementary (14.5%), though Dora Elementary (75.4% reading, 54.4% math) shows the regional ceiling. Two cautions: Valencia's strongest results come from the current fourth grade, which moves on after this year, while the incoming third grade scores below the state in reading; and students from low-income families, English learners, and special education students rank below the school's overall standing.
