Valley View Elementary is a PK–5 neighborhood school at 915 E California Ave in Las Cruces, NM, serving 343 students in Las Cruces Public Schools, where nearly all students are economically disadvantaged and the student–teacher ratio has improved to 10.0.

Academically, Valley View is in a deep trough. In 2025-26 it ranked 317th of 346 ranked New Mexico schools—8th percentile, 0 stars—its weakest year in a decade of rank history, with every year since 2014-15 between the 3rd and 23rd percentile. Proficiency is below district and state in every subject: language arts 30.15%, math 10.29%, and science under 20%, compared with district rates of 44.73%, 24.50%, and 35.77%. Math is the standout gap: roughly two-fifths of the district rate, and far below nearby district elementaries such as Conlee (39.02% math) and Central (25.74%), even though those schools also serve nearly all low-income students. Valley View posts the lowest ELA and math among the nine nearby district elementaries reviewed.

Staffing is a relative strength: the 10:1 ratio is the smallest among nearby district elementaries, but it has not translated into results. One bright spot is English Language Learners, who reached the 47th percentile in 2023-24—mid-pack statewide—while the school overall sits near the bottom. Nearby charters J Paul Taylor Academy and Explore Academy Las Cruces outscore Valley View, but serve much lower low-income populations, so they are not direct demographic peers. The most actionable finding is the math shortfall: 5th grade math is 16.28%, about half the district’s 36.04%, and science is suppressed below 20% versus 34.61% district. Overall, Valley View is a high-poverty, well-staffed school whose results lag even nearby schools serving similar populations.
