Summary

Aztec High is a 9–12 comprehensive high school serving 696 students in Aztec, New Mexico, part of Aztec Municipal Schools, where it is the larger of the district's two high schools — the other, Vista Nueva High, is much smaller and nearby. In 2025–2026 Aztec High ranked 76th of 132 New Mexico high schools, at the 42nd percentile with 2 stars, a sharp rebound from 2024–2025, when it ranked 111th of 131 at the 15th percentile with 1 star. Still, it remains below its stronger historical showings: the 56th percentile in 2021–2022 and the 69th–72nd percentile in 2014–2016.

Academically, the picture is mixed. In 2025–2026 11th-grade testing, Aztec High outperformed its district averages in most subjects but trailed state averages, with language arts (32.87% proficient), science (31.47%) and NM-ASR science (32.61%) as relative strengths. Mathematics is the clear weak spot: just 8.39% of 11th graders were proficient in NM Combined Math and 8.7% in SAT Math, both below district and state. Compared with neighbors, Aztec scored higher than Farmington High in language arts, science and SAT ELA, and higher than Bloomfield High in every reported 11th-grade subject, while Piedra Vista High was roughly comparable in language arts and math but much stronger in science; San Juan College High School performs at a different tier entirely.

Graduation is improving but still trails most nearby schools: 77.1% in 2024–2025, up from 69.0% in 2021–2022 and above the district's 76.0%, but below New Mexico's 80.6% and below Farmington High, Piedra Vista High, Bloomfield High and San Juan College High School, while outpacing Vista Nueva High (64.7%) and Rocinante High (73.2%). The school's 2025–2026 result for Native American students — last among 18 comparison schools with 0 stars — is a serious equity concern, while female, White and low-income students were relative bright spots. With 696 students and a 17.7 student-teacher ratio, Aztec High is a middle-of-the-pack comprehensive high school locally: improving overall, solid in language arts and science, very weak in math, and with graduation below the state and many peers.
