Summary

Sunset View Elementary is a mid-sized K–5 school serving about 407 students on the northwest side of Albuquerque, New Mexico, where it sits in a dense cluster of Albuquerque Public Schools elementary campuses a few miles from the Rio Rancho district line.

On the 2025–2026 state ratings, Sunset View is a 3-star school ranked 117th of 346 schools — the 66th percentile, well above its own district, which ranks 37th percentile statewide. About 54.9% of students are proficient in language arts and 36.8% in math. Math is the school's clearest strength: it runs roughly 11 points above both district and state averages, and among nearby APS K–5 schools only Petroglyph Elementary (42.8%) does better. Language arts also sits at the top of the local group, essentially tied with Petroglyph, Tierra Antigua Elementary and Chamiza Elementary. Science is the exception — 5th grade science proficiency is 29.0%, below both district and state, and well under Sierra Vista Elementary (52.5%) and Chamiza (42.5%). Coyote Willow Family School posts much higher scores, but as a small K–8 school it isn't a like-for-like comparison.

Two things stand out for families. First, Sunset View gets these results with the largest classes in its immediate APS peer group — 16.2 students per teacher, versus 10.0 at Chamiza and 12.7 at Petroglyph. Second, results vary a lot by student group: the school ranks in the 95th percentile statewide for English language learners and around the 89th–91st for Native American students, but only the 13th percentile for special education students, which is the clearest area needing attention. Overall standing has drifted from the 89th percentile a decade ago to a steady 60s–70s range now.

They do not support kids with learning disabilities and there is a huge problem with bullying. The principal is rude, dismissive and hands off from any problems you want to address. Most of the teachers are the same way. There is no communication between the principal and teachers and absolutely no communication from the teachers to the parent. They don't let you know how your kids are doing in school or if there is a problem they wont tell you either. You'll only find out if you child tells you. There is no structure and it is a constant negative atmosphere for the kids. My kids are falling behind and doing worse here than they were at their previous school. Their teachers from last school year where amazing and I wish we never moved here. I can't see how any kid can thrive at this school. My child learns differently and they will not accommodate her at all. Be careful at this school cause if they decide they don't like you it will be a bad experience. Close Quote

The teachers provide one on one assessment and care. The teachers evaluate both the academic progress of the child, as well as the behavioral progress. Talent and leadership is plentiful with the teachers at Sunset View Elementary. Close Quote

My kids love this school. I have always been impressed with their teachers and the office staff. The principal takes a genuine interest in students and the school, which is nice compared to some in Albuquerque. Close Quote
