San Antonito Elementary is a K–5 school serving 299 students at 12555 N Hwy 14 in Sandia Park, NM, a small East Mountains community on the Turquoise Trail about 10 miles east of Albuquerque. It is the smallest school in its comparison group, the only one outside the Albuquerque metro, and part of Albuquerque Public Schools — a district rated 2 stars and ranked 55th of 87 districts (37th percentile), which makes the school's own results the real story here.
In 2025–26 the school ranked 24th of 346 statewide — 93rd percentile, 5 stars — a rebound from an 80th-percentile low in 2023–24, though still below its 2014–2019 run as a top-5, 97th–99th percentile school. Proficiency was 70.19% in language arts, 54.04% in math, and 70.49% in 5th-grade science: about 27 points above the district and state in language arts, 28 in math, and 38 in science. Math climbed 10.4 points in one year and 19 points off its 2023–24 low, while language arts stayed essentially flat, so the rise in rank came almost entirely from math. Among 11 nearby schools, San Antonito places 5th, behind four elite Northeast Heights schools — Double Eagle Elementary, Hubert H Humphrey Elementary, S. Y. Jackson Elementary, and Georgia O'Keeffe Elementary — but its 5th-grade science ranks 3rd, ahead of Double Eagle and Georgia O'Keeffe.
Two things are worth watching. Third grade is the only place San Antonito falls below the middle of its peer group (7th of 11 in both subjects), and 3rd-grade math (41.51%) trails 5th-grade math (62.30%) by nearly 21 points; special education is its least consistent subgroup at 58th percentile and 3 stars in 2023–24, the only result outside the top half of the state, though that figure is two years old. Low-income students, meanwhile, rank at the 93rd percentile — top 8% of New Mexico schools serving that group. Class size isn't the explanation: at 13.2 students per teacher San Antonito is mid-pack, while higher-scoring Double Eagle (14.7) and Humphrey (14.5) run larger classes. Note also that the free/reduced-lunch figure jumped to 100% in 2024–25, but every nearby school reports 99–100%, suggesting a reporting change rather than a shift in enrollment.
