Summary

Arroyo Del Oso Elementary is a PK–5 school at 6504 Harper NE in Albuquerque's northeast heights, serving 321 students as part of Albuquerque Public Schools. It ranks 213th of 346 elementary schools statewide (38th percentile, 2 stars) — almost exactly the district's own middling profile — and virtually all of its students are economically disadvantaged, with free/reduced-price lunch eligibility reported at essentially 100% for each of the last three years.

The most important context for families is the neighborhood. Within roughly 2.5 miles sit some of New Mexico's highest-performing elementaries — Hubert H Humphrey Elementary, Desert Willow Family School, Dennis Chavez Elementary, Osuna Elementary and Comanche Elementary — all serving a similarly high-poverty population yet posting far higher proficiency. Dennis Chavez Elementary, the closest demographic match, is about 23 points higher in ELA and 28 points higher in math. A 125-rank gap separates Comanche Elementary from Arroyo. Class size does not appear to be the constraint: Arroyo's 11.9-to-1 student-teacher ratio is better than most of those neighbors. Its nearest true peers are Mission Avenue Elementary and, lower still, Edmund G Ross Elementary.

Arroyo's own history is a long slide — from the 91st percentile in 2017-18 down to 2 stars — though 2025-26 brought improvement in both reading and math and the decline has flattened. Fifth grade is a genuine strength, beating district and state in math and science, while 4th-grade math is the weakest spot. The clearest warning sign is the low-income subgroup result, which fell from the 64th percentile to the 14th percentile (1 star) in two years — effectively a school-wide finding given the student body.

Open Quote ADO may have been a 5 star Elementary School once but it is not anymore. The Principal has run it to the ground. Parents and teachers alike are very unhappy. Many promises unkept, zero communication, and no consistency.
I do not recommend this school. Close Quote
