Summary:

Alamogordo Public Schools is a 13-school district in Alamogordo, New Mexico — home to Holloman Air Force Base — serving about 5,113 students across nine elementary schools, three middle schools, and one high school. The district itself is rated 3 stars and ranks 41st of 87 districts statewide, but that middle-of-the-pack figure hides enormous differences between individual schools. Nearly every school reports 100% free or reduced-price lunch, so that measure does not distinguish one school from another here.

Two base schools lead the way. Holloman Middle ranks 9th of 191 middle schools statewide (95th percentile, 5 stars), with 75% proficiency in language arts and 65% in math — roughly 2.5 times the state math rate. Holloman Elementary ranks 33rd of 346 (90th percentile, 5 stars), with 68% language arts and 51% math. Both have held 4–5 stars for three straight years. La Luz Elementary is the district's biggest riser, climbing from the 50th to the 74th percentile as its language arts rate went from 39% to 55%. At the other end, five schools sit at or below the 40th percentile.

The district's core weakness is math, and it deepens with grade level: every school scores lower in math than in language arts, and Alamogordo High shows the steepest gap — 47% language arts versus 16% math. North Elementary posts the lowest results (24% language arts, 17% math) despite having the district's smallest classes, and Desert Star Elementary, Mountain View Middle, and Yucca Elementary also fall below state averages. Notably, the highest-performing schools run some of the largest class sizes. The smallest school, High Rolls Mountain Park Elementary (21 students), has all test data suppressed for privacy, so it cannot be compared.
