Summary

Jefferson Elementary School in Summit, New Jersey, serves grades 1–5 and enrolls 221 students in the highly ranked Summit Public School District. SchoolDigger gives the school four stars and places it at the 80th percentile statewide in 2025–2026. Its latest results are above state levels in every reported grade and subject, but the most important finding for families comparing local schools is that Jefferson trails its nearby Summit elementary peers in most grade-by-grade results.

Fourth-grade math is Jefferson’s clearest strength: 90% of students were proficient, compared with 81% districtwide and 47% statewide. The result was higher than at Washington Elementary School, Brayton Elementary School and Lincoln-Hubbard Elementary School, though below Franklin Elementary School. The weaker comparisons are in ELA: Jefferson had the lowest result among the four nearby Summit schools in grades 3, 4 and 5, with 58%, 68% and 65% proficient. It also ranked lowest among them in grade 3 math (71%) and grade 5 science (39%). Even so, Jefferson exceeded state results by 10–22 points in ELA and 22–43 points in math; fifth-grade science was 12 points above the state.

Over time, Jefferson’s equal-weighted grade averages show ELA falling from 75% in 2022–2023 to 64% in 2025–2026, while math rose from 70% to 77% and fifth-grade science from 29% to 39%. In the latest year, ELA declined in all three grades, while math rose in all three. SchoolDigger’s statewide rating is fairly steady, at the 79th–84th percentiles in the rank-history years provided, but its 80th-percentile standing is below the other nearby Summit schools’ 92nd–99th percentiles. Jefferson’s 9.4:1 student-teacher ratio was the lowest among nearby schools with reported ratios in 2024–2025. Its free/reduced lunch eligible share was 27% that year, the highest among nearby schools reporting the same measure. SchoolDigger’s Low Socio Economic Status Students ranking was 63rd percentile in 2025–2026, below Jefferson’s overall 80th percentile, after shifting from 97th to 51st and then back up; its Hispanic Students ranking also changed notably, from 90th to 68th to 76th percentile.

Jefferson School is fantastic. Class sizes are small, teachers really care about the kids, the principal really CARES, knows every child by name, and is enthusiastic about learning and family involvement. Yes, compared to other Summit schools, the student body make up is lower income and more diverse in ethnicity and disability, but there are lots of life lessons there. Diversity is celebrated at Jefferson! All elementary schools lead to the same middle and high school in Summit. Do your homework and you will see the Summit district ranks well in New Jersey/the country and Jefferson is no exception. Don't snub your nose at Jefferson - I feel my child is getting an excellent education and has a better sense of real world dynamics than other Summit elementary kids. There are lots of opportunities for families to be involved and some great programs happening at Jefferson. I have a choice about what side of town I want to live in and I whole-heartedly choose to live in the Jefferson district! Close Quote

Jefferson School is an exceptional school. It has an excellent, highly qualified staff that helps each student achieve his/her highest academic potential while also developing character and values. The student population is truly diverse, which is a rare and treasured gift that is embraced by all members of the school community.
