Summary

Edward J. Patten Elementary School is a public elementary school serving 642 students in grades K-5 in Perth Amboy, New Jersey. The school is part of the Perth Amboy Public School District, which is ranked 568 out of 609 districts in the state and has a 0-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Edward J. Patten Elementary School has consistently ranked in the bottom 20% of New Jersey elementary schools over the past 10 years, with a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger. The school's proficiency rates on the NJSLA assessments are significantly lower than the state and district averages across all grade levels and subjects. For example, in 2024-2025, only 28.7% of 3rd graders were proficient in ELA compared to the state average of 44.9%. The school also has high chronic absenteeism rates, ranging from 14.9% to 27.4% over the past few years, which is well above the state target of 10%. Additionally, a very high percentage (75.39% in 2023-2024) of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, indicating a high-poverty student population.

While the school's overall performance is low, its African American students perform relatively well, ranking in the top 15% of New Jersey elementary schools for this subgroup in 2024-2025. This suggests the school may be doing a better job serving its African American students compared to other subgroups. However, the other elementary schools in the Perth Amboy district, such as Rose M. Lopez Elementary and Herbert N. Richardson 21st Century School, have similar low performance and rankings, indicating a systemic issue within the district that extends beyond a single school.

Open Quote This school is equip with teachers who go above and beyond to get students ahead in their educations. These low ratings are not at all doing teachers justice. I am a product of this school and have recognized that my strong math and writing background all was instilled here. I attend a top 50 university and achieved an A in my calculus class. In the end, it all goes back to your foundations. This school definitely gave me a strong foundation in every subject and I will forever be grateful for that. Close Quote
