Summary

Hilldale School is a public K–5 elementary school in Pine Brook, New Jersey, with 327 students, part of the Montville Township School District. Its 2025–2026 state-test results exceed district and state results in every tested grade and subject, and it leads nearby schools in all seven grade-and-subject comparisons. The most important takeaway is that Hilldale’s academic strength is broad across grades and subjects, not limited to one standout score.

Science is Hilldale’s clearest relative strength: its fifth-grade proficiency was 74%, compared with 47% at nearby schools, a 27-point advantage. Across grades 3–5, Hilldale averaged 92% in ELA and 90% in math, versus nearby averages of 70% and 73%; math is its smallest advantage over nearby schools, but the results remain well ahead. Fourth-grade ELA and math were both 94%, including a 28-point lead over the nearby average in ELA. Over time, science has risen substantially: fifth-grade proficiency climbed from 49% in 2022–2023 to 74% in 2025–2026, while math increased 7 points and ELA stayed essentially flat. Science did dip from 77% in 2024–2025, so the longer-term rise has not been steady each year. SchoolDigger ranks Hilldale #7 of 1,331 New Jersey schools, in the 99th percentile with five stars. In 2024–2025, its student-teacher ratio was 10.5, below the nearby-school average of 11.3; about 2% of students were free/reduced lunch eligible, tied for the lowest reported rate nearby. SchoolDigger’s older statewide measure for special education students improved from the 72nd percentile (rank 282 of 1,001) in 2017–2018 to the 84th percentile (rank 163 of 1,007) in 2018–2019, a 12-point rise; this is a historical result, not a current-year finding.
