Summary

Empowerment Academy Charter School is an alternative public charter school located in Jersey City, NJ, serving grades KG-10 with a total enrollment of 1,181 students. The school serves a predominantly low-income population, with 65.03% to 72.4% of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch over the past few years.

Empowerment Academy Charter School has generally outperformed the state average in English Language Arts (ELA) proficiency, with scores ranging from 41.5% to 64.6% proficient or better in 2024-2025. However, the school's mathematics proficiency lags behind the state, with scores ranging from 18.2% to 57.9% proficient or better in the same year. The school has also experienced relatively high chronic absenteeism rates, ranging from 14.9% to 19.5% over the past few years, which is higher than the state average and some nearby charter schools. At $8,106 per student in 2018-2019, Empowerment Academy Charter School's spending is lower than some of the nearby charter schools, such as TEAM Academy ($11,261) and Great Oaks Legacy ($13,707).

Compared to nearby charter schools, Empowerment Academy Charter School's performance on ELA and mathematics proficiency tests is mixed. While it outperforms the state average in ELA, it lags behind schools like North Star Academy, TEAM Academy, and BelovED Community Charter in both ELA and mathematics. The high chronic absenteeism rates at Empowerment Academy Charter School are a concern and may be impacting student learning and achievement, an area the school should focus on improving.

Open Quote I also am surprised by the rating on this website and I would like to know how the rating was derived. My scholar attends this school and I can personally attest to the level of growth she has had this year. Not only is the school well run but the teachers are caring and are very good educators. The curriculum is also very impressive. Close Quote

Open Quote I have no idea where these rankings came from but this school is stellar! The work they are doing is above grade level and on par or exceeds with any suburban school in the state. They focus on the whole child - socially and academically. They offer the core subjects of math and ELA as well as performing arts, technology, visual arts, gym and Spanish in their regular curriculum. Additionally, they have added a gifted and talented program and a host of after school enrichment activities ranging from sports (basketball, soccer), dance, guitar, robotics, yoga and math league. Their core values really instill a sense of purpose and responsibility in the students. My kid is scoring at the 99th percentile nationally on the standardized tests and absolutely loves going to school. I don't know what they could possibly be missing! Close Quote
