Summary:
The three middle schools in Hazlet Township Public School District, in Hazlet Township, New Jersey, serve grades 5–8: Beers Street School and Cove Road School serve grades 5–6, and Hazlet Middle School serves grades 7–8. Enrollment ranges from 175 to 376 students. In 2025–2026, the schools’ average results were stronger than the state’s in ELA (56% versus 52%), but below it in math (37% versus 39%) and science (23% versus 25%). Since the schools serve different grade spans, comparisons are most useful within the same grade. The clearest divide is grade 6 math: Beers Street scored 58%, Cove Road 34%, and the state 40—a 24-point gap between the schools.
Beers Street stands out among the schools serving grades 5–6, leading Cove Road in all five comparable results: by 0.5 points in grade 5 ELA, 6 points in grade 6 ELA, 4 in grade 5 math, 24 in grade 6 math, and 13 in grade 5 science. Beers was also above the state in all five comparisons. Cove’s results were mixed: it was above the state in both ELA grades, but below in grade 5 math, grade 6 math, and grade 5 science. Hazlet Middle had the weakest math profile against its grade-specific state results: grade 7 was 26% versus 38% statewide, and grade 8 was 12% versus 23%. Its ELA was closer to the state, with grade 7 three points below and grade 8 0.3 points above.
Results changed unevenly from 2024–2025 to 2025–2026. Beers Street’s ELA fell 9 points in grade 5 and 17 in grade 6, while its math rose 3 and 4 points, respectively, and its science rose 7. Cove Road’s grade 5 science fell 2 points. At Hazlet Middle, grade 7 math dropped 17 points, while grade 8 math rose 3. As context—not an explanation for results—2024–2025 free/reduced lunch eligible shares were 19% at Beers, 29% at Cove, and 25% at Hazlet; student-teacher ratios were 11.2 at Beers and 9.9 at both Cove and Hazlet.
