Summary:
The 10 schools in Atlantic City School District include nine elementary schools and one high school, serving students from elementary grades through high school in Atlantic City. In 2025–2026, the elementary schools’ average grades 3–5 results were 27% proficient in ELA and 22% in math, compared with state averages of 49% and 47%; across grades 6–8, the averages were 34% in ELA and 17% in math, versus 53% and 34% statewide. The defining finding is a wide divide among elementary schools, rather than uniformly strong or weak results across the area.
Richmond Avenue School is the clearest elementary standout: its grades 3–5 averages were 60% in ELA and 59% in math, each about 12 percentage points above the matching state average. The other eight schools averaged about 23% in ELA and 17% in math. At the low end, Uptown School Complex averaged 8% in ELA and 4% in math. Chelsea Heights School was especially competitive in grades 6–8, averaging 53% in ELA and 33% in math, close to state averages of 53% and 34%. Individual results can differ from a school’s broader pattern: Sovereign Avenue School had 86% proficient in end-of-course Algebra I and 90% in grade 8 Algebra I, above state results of 40% and 75%.
Recent elementary changes were mixed: grades 3–5 averages fell 5 percentage points in ELA but rose 1 point in math from 2024–2025 to 2025–2026; the corresponding state changes were down 2 points and up less than 1 point. Richmond Avenue remains the highest-ranked listed elementary school by SchoolDigger percentile, though its percentile moved from 70 in 2023–2024 to 63 in 2025–2026. Student–teacher ratios do not mirror results: Richmond’s was 10.1, while Uptown’s was 8.7. All nine elementary schools reported free/reduced lunch eligible for sy 2024–2025, with shares from 86% to 92%; these are context, not an explanation of test results. The high school also faces concerns: Atlantic City High School had 50% chronic absenteeism in 2024–2025, compared with 14% statewide, and its 2025–2026 proficiency was 7% in end-of-course Algebra I and 34% in NJGPA math, versus 40% and 61% statewide.
