Summary

Litchfield Middle School is a public school in the Litchfield, New Hampshire, community serving 344 students in grades 5–8 as part of the Litchfield School District. The school has recently made a notable academic turnaround: its statewide ranking rose to 39th of 138 schools, or the 72nd percentile, in 2025–26, compared with the 38th percentile the year before. Litchfield is smaller than most nearby middle schools, and its 11.5-to-1 student-teacher ratio provides a relatively favorable staffing environment.

Current achievement is slightly above the New Hampshire average in mathematics, reading, and science. Proficiency rates are 46% in math, 60% in reading, and 47% in science, with science standing out at nine percentage points above the state average. The school’s strongest results are in eighth grade: 64% of students are proficient in math, 67% in reading, and 51% in science. Eighth-grade math is especially impressive compared with the 40% statewide rate. Earlier grades are more uneven, particularly fifth- and sixth-grade mathematics and sixth-grade reading, suggesting that the transition into middle school is an important area for continued improvement.

Compared with nearby schools, Litchfield is not among the top performers represented by McKelvie Intermediate School, Ross A. Lurgio Middle School, Amherst Middle School, or the Academy for Science and Design Charter (M). However, it compares favorably with Londonderry Middle School, Merrimack Middle School, and several Nashua-area schools, especially in reading and science. Overall, Litchfield appears to be a small, improving school with strong later-grade outcomes and meaningful potential if it can raise performance in grades 5 and 6 while sustaining its recent progress.

Open Quote I am thrilled with the schools here. Well the Elementary and Middle School at least. I have no children in High School yet.

I home schooled my son prior to moving to Litchfield, they made his transition into public school almost seamless.

The teachers are, for the most part, innovative and conscientious. They actually seem to LOVE their job! That is the best compliment I can give. Close Quote
