Exeter High School is a large, traditional public high school serving grades 9–12 in the Exeter, New Hampshire area, with 1,348 students in the Exeter Region Cooperative School District. It is a consistently strong school, ranking 14th out of 89 New Hampshire high schools for 2025–2026 and generally placing among the state’s top 15–20% over the past decade.

The school’s biggest strengths are graduation, student persistence, reading, and science. The 2024–2025 graduation rate was 95.8%, nearly nine points above the state average, while the dropout rate was just 0.2%. In the latest assessment results, 70% of students were proficient in reading and 55% in science, compared with 55% and 38% statewide. Mathematics was more moderate at 45% proficiency—only slightly above the state average and a clear opportunity for improvement. Reading also declined from 80% the previous year, so that trend is worth monitoring. The school’s student-teacher ratio was 12.1:1, a reasonable figure for a school of its size.

Locally, Exeter is a strong choice but is currently behind its two closest high-performing benchmarks, Portsmouth High School and Oyster River High School. Both ranked higher statewide and posted stronger mathematics and reading results; Oyster River also reported a 99% graduation rate. Exeter nevertheless outperformed most other nearby comprehensive schools, including Winnacunnet High School, Raymond High School, and Sanborn Regional High School.
