Summary:

ZIP code 27928, covering the rural northeastern North Carolina towns of Creswell and Roper, has two schools serving a combined 341 students: Pocosin Innovative Charter, a K-8 charter enrolling 269, and Washington Early College High, a 9-12 early college with about 72. No traditional middle school exists; Pocosin spans elementary and middle grades. Both schools have low chronic absenteeism (Washington 5.5%, Pocosin 14.3%) compared with 24.2% statewide.

Washington Early College High is the area's standout. Its district, Washington County Schools, ranks in the 20th percentile of North Carolina districts and struggles with a 40.7% chronic absenteeism rate, but the early college sits at the 78th percentile of high schools statewide with a four-star rating. Test scores tell the story: 73.3% proficient in Biology versus 25.9% district-wide, and 89.5% in Math III versus 44.4% district-wide. English II hit 69.2%, compared to the district's 30.6%. Even with 95.8% of students eligible for free/reduced lunch, graduation reaches 91.3%, above the state's 88.8%.

Pocosin Innovative Charter has also trended upward, reaching the 59th percentile of North Carolina schools in 2025-26. Science is its strongest subject: 8th-grade science proficiency is 85.7% versus 68.6% statewide, and 8th-grade reading is strong at 78.6%. Yet grade-level performance is uneven. Only 32.4% of 5th graders read proficiently (55.3% statewide), and 7th-grade math and reading both lag at 43.5% versus about 56% statewide. For parents, these two schools offer very different paths: the early college is a rigorous high school option that yields exceptional results for its small student body, while the charter provides a K-8 education strongest in early elementary and 8th grade.
