Weldon High School is a small, rural public high school in Halifax, NC, that serves 145 students in grades 9–12 and is part of the Weldon City Schools district, ranked among the bottom 12% of North Carolina districts. Nearly all Weldon students — about 98% — come from low-income households that qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. After years of ranking in the bottom 5–8% of state high schools, Weldon climbed to the 31st percentile in 2025-26 and earned 2 stars, its strongest statewide position in at least a decade.

Weldon’s latest test scores show a dramatic, broad-based turnaround. Proficiency in Math I jumped from 18.5% to 50% and Math III jumped from 28.6% to 73.7%, putting both above the state average and ahead of nearby traditional peers such as Roanoke Rapids High School (29.5% Math I) and Northwest Halifax Collegiate and Technic (17.6% Math I). Biology (29%) and English II (33.3%) remain below the state average, but Weldon’s African American students and low-income students each climbed from the bottom 10% of the state to about the middle, earning 3 stars for school effectiveness.
