Summary

Northampton County High School is a traditional public high school in rural Gaston, North Carolina, serving 265 students in grades 9–12 as part of Northampton County Schools. Nearly all students come from low-income households, with 98.9% eligible for free or reduced-price lunch. The school has ranked in the bottom 2 to 6 percent of North Carolina high schools for nearly a decade, earning a 0-star rating and placing 622nd out of 662 high schools statewide in 2025–2026.

Test scores fall far below district and state averages on every End-of-Course exam. Only 11.8% of students were proficient in Biology in the most recent testing year, compared with 58.5% statewide, and just 22.8% were proficient in Math III versus 68.9% statewide. Chronic absenteeism is perhaps the biggest barrier to learning: 74% of students were chronically absent in 2024–2025, roughly three times the state average of 24.2%. The school's graduation rate did improve from 67.4% to 82.2% in the most recent year, but it still trails the state average of 88.8%.

The most striking finding is how different outcomes are for early college high schools in the same region. Northampton Early College, part of the same district and serving a similarly high-poverty population, ranks in the 54th percentile with 3 stars — and over 80% of its students are proficient in Math III, compared with just 22.8% at Northampton County High School. Roanoke Rapids Early College High and Halifax County Early College High both rank at the 87th percentile statewide. Meanwhile, traditional high schools in the area, including Roanoke Rapids High School, cluster near the bottom. Northampton County High School actually spends more per student ($17,040) than Northampton Early College ($11,161), raising important questions about whether resources are reaching classrooms effectively. Recent gains in English II and Math III show improvement is possible, but tackling the attendance crisis and making better use of funding will be essential for lasting change.
