Summary

Brogden Primary is a PK–4 elementary school in Dudley, NC, serving 689 students in Wayne County Public Schools, a district ranked 110th out of 246 across North Carolina. After spending most of the past decade in the bottom 10–15% of the state's elementary schools, Brogden has turned a corner: its statewide ranking jumped from the 15th to the 39th percentile, lifting it from a 0-star to a 2-star rating. Third-grade scores explain the momentum — math proficiency rose from 42.6% to 71.1%, above the state average of 66.4%, while reading proficiency nearly doubled from 23.5% to 51.9%, approaching district and state levels.

Those early-grade gains, however, have not yet reached 4th grade. Fourth-grade reading proficiency remains at just 37.2% — roughly 20 points below the state average and 19 points below the district — and 4th-grade math trails the state by about 8.5 points. The school's standout success is with English Language Learners, who perform in the top quarter of North Carolina elementary schools, and Hispanic students, who rank in the 65th percentile statewide. Special education outcomes are the clearest concern, with the school ranking at the 2nd percentile in that area — a likely focus for improvement.

Brogden also trails several nearby schools serving similarly high-poverty populations. Carver Elementary, Meadow Lane Elementary, and Grantham Elementary all rank between the 69th and 72nd percentiles statewide and outpace Brogden by 25–29 percentage points in 4th-grade reading. Brogden does rank ahead of Wayne STEM Academy and Dillard Academy. Chronic absenteeism has dropped from 52.7% in 2020–21 to 36.1%, yet one in three students still misses too much school — well above the district rate of 31.6% and far above Carver Elementary's 20.9%. Continuing to close that attendance gap may be the most promising lever for future gains.
