Summary

Rosman Elementary is a Pre-K through 5th grade public school in the small town of Rosman, NC, serving 344 students as part of Transylvania County Schools. The school has made a strong impression in recent statewide rankings, climbing to #248 of roughly 1,500 North Carolina elementary schools — placing it in the top 17% and earning a 4-star rating. It currently ranks as the strongest elementary school in the district, finishing well ahead of Pisgah Forest Elementary, T C Henderson, and Brevard Elementary, while also outranking the local charter, Brevard Academy.

What makes Rosman's success especially notable is that nearly all of its students — 99% — qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. Despite this, Rosman students scored above state averages in every tested grade and subject in the most recent school year. The school is particularly effective with students who are historically underserved: its economically disadvantaged students rank in the 94th percentile statewide, and its special education students rank in the 97th percentile. Fifth grade is a clear highlight, with reading, math, and science proficiency rates running 12 to 15 points above district averages. Nearby Etowah Elementary achieves a similar overall ranking, but with a much more affluent student body, which makes Rosman's results with its own population all the more striking.

Rosman also appears to be on a strong upward trajectory. After dipping to the 48th percentile during the pandemic, the school has recovered to near its pre-pandemic peak of the 89th percentile, a sign of solid instructional recovery. The main area to watch is chronic absenteeism: about 22% of students missed enough school to be considered chronically absent in 2024-2025. That is better than the state average but higher than several nearby schools, including Etowah Elementary at just under 13%. Given how much ground Rosman has already made up, improving attendance could be the key to even stronger results ahead.
