Summary

Brevard Academy is a K-8 public charter school in Pisgah Forest, NC, serving 435 students in the mountain community of Transylvania County. It operates as its own charter district, and its district-level ranking is strong — #33 out of 246 North Carolina districts, 87th percentile. At the school level, Brevard Academy ranks #358 out of 1,492 schools for 2025-2026 (76th percentile, 4 stars), a solid rebound from the prior year's #473 ranking and consistent with its history of upper-middle-range performance.

The school's clearest academic strengths are reading and science. Reading proficiency tops state averages in every tested grade, with 3rd graders reaching 79.5% proficiency versus 55.6% statewide. Science is exceptional: 78.3% of 5th graders and 90.5% of 8th graders are proficient, well above state averages near 68%. Brevard Academy also produces notably strong results for economically disadvantaged students (78th percentile) and special education students (82nd percentile), making it an equitable choice. It clearly outperforms the neighboring Pisgah Forest Elementary (65th percentile), but several other area schools rank higher, including Glenn C Marlow Elementary (92nd percentile), Hendersonville Elementary (91st), and The Mountain Community School (85th).

Families considering Brevard Academy should be aware of a few challenges. Math proficiency is outstanding in 4th grade (84.4%) but drops to roughly state average or below by 5th through 7th grades. There is also a consistent gender gap: male students rank in the 86th percentile while female students rank in the 64th. Chronic absenteeism affects 21.7% of students — below the state rate of 24.2%, but much higher than high-performing nearby schools like Mills River Elementary, where only 8.0% of students are chronically absent. Addressing attendance and middle-grade math could elevate this already solid K-8 school.

Open Quote Brevard Academy is a blessing for my son. The staff and faculty take time to mold particular learning plans for each and every student. They care for the children as they were their own. My son has learned so much from the teacher's and Brevard Academy. I'm forever grateful. Close Quote

Open Quote Brevard Academy has been a great fit for our three kids. Teachers, staff and faculty truly care about our children. The kids have PE every day and get to be outside. They are encouraged to help throughout the school, for example students open doors for kids at drop off in the mornings and there are classroom helpers of kids in the older grades to help the younger ones. There is a sense of community throughout the school. We have been very happy there for 3 years. Close Quote

Open Quote This is our second year at Brevard Academy and it was the perfect choice for our two children. We toured a few schools when we moved to Brevard and immediately knew that BA would offer the best opportunity for academic and social growth. We appreciate the caring and supportive environment maintained by the staff and administration. Our children are growing and they are happy to attend school each day! Close Quote

Open Quote We live this school for our two young boys. Each grade only has two classes and have teacher assistants for each grade. They value the parents opinions and do so much for the kids. The director cares and communicates with families daily. We can’t say enough good things about our school. Close Quote

Open Quote Our family joined in a partnership with Brevard Academy to support our daughter’s education in 2017. This decision has proven time and time again to be one of the best we have made for our daughter. The school community, teachers, and administrators offered and continue to grow the family environment that we desire. The feeling inside the building: happy students and the phenomenal staff lead by an extraordinary director is what I have described as “sunshine!”
It is difficult to walk down any hallway and not hear laugher, meet someone with a smile, or find yourself enjoying the work of growing students highlighted outside of the classrooms. Brevard Academy has become a part of our family, just as we are a part of it’s family. We are grateful for the responsibility and care Brevard Academy invests in the growth and development of our daughter as a person, and a student. We look forward to the amazing things our last few years at the school will bring.
