Fairmont Middle is a small school in Fairmont, North Carolina, serving 253 students in grades 5–8 within the Public Schools of Robeson County, a district that itself ranks in the bottom quarter of districts statewide. The school currently ranks 765th out of 778 North Carolina middle schools, placing it in the bottom 2% of the state and making it the lowest-ranked middle school in the surrounding area.

Academic proficiency at Fairmont is far below district and state averages in nearly every grade and subject. In 2025–26, only 12.1% of 5th graders and 11.5% of 6th graders were proficient in math, compared with district averages around 45.8% and 40.1%, respectively. Reading and science results were similarly low, with most proficiency rates in the teens or early twenties. These gaps are especially striking compared with Littlefield Middle, just 15 miles away in the same district with similar poverty rates — Littlefield ranked in the 48th percentile and posted a 5th-grade math proficiency rate of 75.0%, versus 12.1% at Fairmont. Nearby schools like Orrum Middle, Pembroke Middle, and Lumberton Junior also outperform Fairmont in most subjects, despite serving similarly high-poverty communities. Every major student subgroup at Fairmont ranks at or near the bottom percentile statewide.

Chronic absenteeism stands out as a major barrier. Over half of Fairmont's students were chronically absent in 2024–25 (52.6%), nearly double the state rate of 24.2% and well above the district's 42.1%. By contrast, Littlefield Middle had a chronic absenteeism rate of just 33.2% — one of several indicators suggesting demographics alone do not explain Fairmont's outcomes. Fairmont actually has a lower student-teacher ratio (11.9 vs. 19.6) and higher per-pupil spending than Littlefield. The decline also predates the pandemic: after ranking near the 20th percentile from 2015–16 through 2017–18, the school fell to the 5th percentile in 2018–19 and has remained near the bottom since. Special education students have been a relative bright spot at times, ranking in the 33rd percentile in 2024–25, but school-wide results point to an urgent need for improvement.
