Summary

Littlefield Middle is a grades 4–8 school in Lumberton, NC, enrolling 632 students in the Public Schools of Robeson County, a district where nearly all students come from low-income households. The school's most recent statewide ranking is its strongest in years: 408th of 778 middle schools (48th percentile), up from the 24th percentile the previous year. That places Littlefield well above every nearby school in its own district — Pembroke Middle, Fairmont Middle, Orrum Middle, Saint Pauls Middle, and Lumberton Junior all rank between the 2nd and 13th percentile.

Littlefield outperforms its district in every tested grade and subject, often by wide margins. Examples include 4th grade math (74.2% proficient vs. a 46.5% district average) and 8th grade science (68.6% vs. 50.5%). Among nearby schools, only Gray's Creek Middle in Cumberland County Schools ranks higher, and it serves a far less economically disadvantaged population. Littlefield's strongest results are in grades 4 and 5, where it exceeds state averages in math, reading, and science; by 7th and 8th grade, scores sit closer to state averages, with 7th grade reading a notable soft spot. Recent gains were broad and dramatic — 7th grade math jumped from 23.9% to 56.3% proficiency in one year. Subgroup results are also noteworthy: Native American students rank 3rd statewide, with strong percentile rankings for African American, low-income, Hispanic, and multiracial students as well.

Chronic absenteeism, while above the state average at 33.2%, is far better than the Robeson County district average of 42.1% and has fallen sharply from 58.6% in 2021–2022. The school also achieves these results with fewer resources: its student-teacher ratio of 19.6 is the highest among nearby schools, and per-pupil spending of $8,506 is below most peers. The broad-based improvements look like a genuine turnaround, but the real test is whether they will be sustained — and whether upper grades can catch up to the strong early-grade results. If so, Littlefield would be one of the more successful middle schools in southeastern North Carolina.
