Providence Grove High School

Providence Grove High School is a traditional 9–12 public high school in Climax, NC, serving 587 students as part of the Randolph County School System.

The school currently holds a 2-star rating and ranks in the bottom third of North Carolina high schools — a step down from its 2015–16 peak, when it earned 3 stars and sat in the 52nd percentile. Within its district, it generally outperforms Eastern Randolph High School and Randleman High School on most measures, while sitting far behind Randolph Early College High School, which has a very different academic profile. One clear bright spot is graduation: 94% of students earn a diploma, above both the district rate of 90.8% and the state rate of 87.7%.

Since students typically take Math I early in high school, that gap points to foundational math readiness as a core challenge. Notably, Southeast Guilford High School serves a far more economically disadvantaged population yet still outperforms the school in every end-of-course subject, suggesting these results are not explained by demographics alone.

The bigger concern is consistency. Even the school's strongest student subgroups rank below the statewide median for their peers, and outcomes can swing sharply from year to year — special education students, for example, fell from the 55th to the 5th percentile in a single year. At the same time, the strong graduation rate, solid Math III performance, and occasional subgroup bright spots show this school is capable of better outcomes. The open question is whether it can deliver those results consistently across subjects and student populations.
