Tryon Elementary School is a PK–5 school in Tryon, NC, in the foothills of western North Carolina, enrolling about 367 students in Polk County Schools. Roughly 99% of its students qualify for free/reduced-price lunch, yet its chronic absenteeism rate of 13.7% in 2024-25 was far better than both the district rate of 23.5% and the statewide rate of 24.2%. Academically, Tryon has slid from elite status into the upper-middle tier. For much of the last decade it ranked in the 89th to 93rd percentile statewide, earning five-star ratings in consecutive years and finishing at the 90th percentile as recently as 2022-23. Since then, the ranking has fallen steadily: 80th percentile in 2023-24, 69th in 2024-25, and 67th in 2025-26. Grade-level results reveal the problem. Third graders are thriving, with 89.1% proficient in math and 72.7% in reading — comfortably above state averages. Fifth graders, by contrast, reach only 58% in math, 48% in reading, and 58% in science — all below the state — and those 5th-grade scores have declined for four consecutive years. Locally, Tryon ranks above Polk Central Elementary School (45th percentile), about even with Sunny View Elementary School (67th), and behind Saluda Elementary School (88th percentile), which now leads Polk County elementary schools.

Subgroup performance is genuinely encouraging. Hispanic students at the school ranked at the 90th percentile statewide for their subgroup in 2025-26, special education students at the 89th, and low-income students at the 73rd — an especially meaningful result in a school where nearly every child is economically disadvantaged. White students, as a subgroup, ranked at the 45th percentile — a gap worth monitoring. The school's real puzzle is the late-elementary slide. Tryon offers excellent attendance, strong early-grade instruction, and notable success with groups that often underperform statewide — but its next challenge, and the key to regaining its former standing, is rebuilding 5th-grade achievement.
