Pender Innovative Learning Academy

Pender Innovative Learning Academy is a small alternative school in Rocky Point, NC, serving just 38 students in grades K-12 through Pender County Schools, a district ranked 120th out of 246 in North Carolina. Because it is an alternative setting, Pender serves a very different population than nearby schools. More than 86% of students qualified for free/reduced lunch in 2024–2025, compared with about 35% at American Leadership Academy-Coastal (ALA-Coastal), a 1,002-student school roughly 11 miles away. Graduation rates have at times surpassed state averages, reaching nearly 93% in 2024–2025, which suggests that students who consistently attend can find a successful path to a diploma at Pender. Reading proficiency has also been relatively stronger than math in several recent years. Because the school is so small, families should interpret year-to-year percentage swings with caution — a change of just a few students can shift rates dramatically. Overall, Pender appears to be a high-support, intervention-focused school where attendance is the key factor standing between students and the academic gains the school is working to achieve.
