Summary

American Leadership Academy-Coastal is a public charter school located in Wilmington, North Carolina, serving grades K-10 with a total enrollment of 862 students. As a charter school, it operates independently from the traditional public school district, allowing for more flexibility in curriculum and teaching methods.

American Leadership Academy-Coastal consistently outperforms the state average in mathematics, reading, and science proficiency across most grade levels. For example, in 2024-2025, the school's projected proficiency rates are 70.1% in 3rd grade math and 72.5% in English II, compared to the state averages of 64.1% and 59.6%, respectively. The school's performance is particularly strong in mathematics, with proficiency rates exceeding the state average by a significant margin in most grades. In comparison to the nearby Pender Innovative Learning Academy, American Leadership Academy-Coastal demonstrates significantly higher academic achievement, with proficiency rates that are generally 20-30 percentage points higher across various subjects and grade levels.

American Leadership Academy-Coastal has maintained a relatively low student-teacher ratio, ranging from 15.6 to 17.2 over the past three school years, in contrast to the much higher student-teacher ratio of 9.6 at the nearby Pender Innovative Learning Academy in the 2023-2024 school year. The lack of specific data on free and reduced lunch rates at American Leadership Academy-Coastal makes it difficult to assess the socioeconomic diversity of the student population, but the school's strong academic performance and low student-teacher ratio may indicate a diverse student body with access to quality educational resources.

Open Quote Parents with shared custody should be very cautious before enrolling at ALA Coastal.

In my experience, ALA Coastal accepted and maintained enrollment paperwork submitted by one parent without first verifying that the enrolling parent had authority to make that school-placement decision unilaterally, despite joint legal custody being involved. Once the enrollment record existed, the school’s position became that removal or transfer would require a court order, transfer request, or other formal documentation — meaning the registration itself was effectively protected after the fact.

My concern is not simply that a paperwork error occurred. My concern is that the school’s process did not adequately protect both parents’ rights before creating or maintaining an enrollment record that had major legal and practical consequences. The registration records also contained factual inaccuracies, including a certification that no court order existed, and the school has still not fully resolved or corrected the record issues despite being placed on notice.

If your child has two involved parents in separate households, do not assume ALA Coastal will independently verify both parents’ authority before processing enrollment or continuation records. Based on my experience, parents should ask direct questions in writing before enrollment, including:

whether both legal custodians must consent
what custody documents the school requires
whether the school will verify legal authority before accepting registration
how the school handles disputed enrollment
and how quickly inaccurate student records will be corrected.

For families with no custody complexity, your experience may be different. But for shared-custody families, I would strongly caution parents to get clear written answers before trusting this school’s registration process. My experience has been deeply concerning. Close Quote

Open Quote Don’t listen to the negative reviews. Most a left extremists who want to force their views down your child’s throat. If your looking for a school that your tax dollars are paying for that you can actually send your child to school without critical race theory, glorifying socialism, gender pronoun confusion, and all the other left extremism then hopefully this school will prevail and actually teach subjects where kids are there to learn and not be groomed and indoctrinated into left extremism. Open Quote I see why this school rating is awful from personal experience this school lacks professional structure, safety for children and a healthy educational environment for children. Aimed lawsuits filed and complaints over the last year even the new principal she doesn't seem to care about covid and wants to run the school like flordia and we see how that's going. Also want to stop teaching certain subjects such as black history and etc due to Republican board members. Alot of parents are highly upset with this school and me being one of them. This is rated one of the worst schools in the United States don't send your kids here. My son is blessed and I stopped him from stepping foot in this school. He doesn't feel comfortable going here and I support him. I decided to invest in his education elsewhere. Close Quote

Open Quote Extremely disappointed. Very “green” teachers. My children are nowhere near where there peers from other schools are academically. Expect zero follow up from leadership if you have a concern. Definitely place your children elsewhere if you care about their education. This school is winging it every day. It really is a joke. Open Quote Please research this school before enrolling. Look up the school performance on state assessments (D rating with -11 Growth in 2018), read the parent comments on social media, and follow the blog Tales of an Educated Debutante. This school is failing to teach a well-balanced curriculum and does not differentiate to meet the needs of learners. Close Quote

Open Quote My child was in Kindergarten at CPA. She did not learn any sight words and could not read when she left. Her advanced Math skills were not being built upon as she was “learning” to count to 100- a skill she learned in prek. She was also tracing letters and numbers- also skills she learned in prek. We pulled her in Jan and she is excelling in her new school. Close Quote
