Summary

Pine Valley Elementary is a K–5 school in Wilmington, North Carolina, within New Hanover County Schools, serving 465 students in a community where nearly all families qualify for subsidized meals.

The most striking result at Pine Valley is its attendance record. Even though 99.35% of students qualified for free or reduced-price lunch in 2024–25, only 14.6% were chronically absent — well below the district average of 23.8% and the state average of 24.2%, and far lower than similar high-poverty schools like Edwin A Alderman Elementary (26.8%) and Sunset Park Elementary (29.6%). Academically, Pine Valley’s 64th-percentile statewide rank puts it roughly on par with Winter Park Model Elementary (65th) and well ahead of Mary C Williams Elementary (36th), Alderman (7th), and Sunset Park (3rd). Still, its proximity to much more affluent schools tells a different story; within about two miles, Dr John Codington Elementary, Masonboro Elementary, and Holly Tree Elementary all post substantially higher proficiency rates. Pine Valley achieves its results with a higher student-teacher ratio (15.8:1) and lower per-pupil spending than most comparable schools.

The bigger concern is momentum. Pine Valley ranked in the 84th percentile as recently as 2023–24 but has since slipped to its current 3-star, 64th-percentile rating, with noticeable drops in reading and science proficiency. State subgroup data also show an uneven picture: the school serves female students far more effectively than male students (75th vs. 54th percentile in 2025–26), and special education and economically disadvantaged subgroup rankings have fallen in recent years. Encouragingly, its African American students ranked in the 66th percentile statewide in 2025–26, up sharply from the 50th percentile the prior year. Taken together, Pine Valley remains one of the more notable high-poverty elementary schools in the Wilmington area — but reversing its recent slide will be the next test.

Amazing! School has excellent teachers who genuinely care about their students. The teachers I know seem to be excited to teach, and are inspirational role models. Don't waste your time looking at Pine Valley Elementary. I thought it would be a great neighborhood school and friendly atmosphere. Not a chance. Kids are bused in from everywhere. I have seen far more bullying at this school then the others my older children attended. It also looks like a PRISON!!! Close Quote

Great school! We moved here in 2008. My one daughter started kindergarten there. I have to say that both teachers and staff go above and beyond for these children. The parents care A WHOLE LOT about there school. You can have lunch with your child any time you'd like. Volunteering is always welcome. PTA is top notch. Located in a nice, clean well respected area... WE LOVE IT! Close Quote
