Summary

John T Hoggard High is one of the largest comprehensive high schools in Wilmington, North Carolina, serving about 2,080 students in grades 9–12 as part of New Hanover County Schools. The school is academically solid: in 2025–2026 it outscored the district and state on every End-of-Course exam—Biology (69.2% proficient), English II (74.4%), Math I (56.8%), and Math III (77.5%)—and its 90.6% graduation rate tops both benchmarks. That places Hoggard 213th out of 662 North Carolina high schools, a step down from its top-100 days but still the strongest large traditional high school in Wilmington.

Hoggard also stands out among Wilmington’s zoned high schools for its comparatively affluent student body: only about 36% of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, versus roughly 95% at Emsley A Laney High, about 98% at New Hanover High, and around 99% at North Brunswick High. Eugene Ashley High, at roughly 40%, is closest. Yet Hoggard is not in the region’s elite tier: small specialty schools like SEA-Technical, Isaac M Bear Early College High School, and Wilmington Early College High post far higher proficiency rates—and SEA-Technical does so while serving an almost entirely low-income student body.

There are caution signs, though. Chronic absenteeism reached 25.7% in 2024–2025, above the district and state rates. Math I is the clearest academic weakness at 56.8% proficiency, though that is a big jump from 39.3% a year earlier; biology and math scores have also swung sharply year to year. Hoggard has meaningful achievement gaps: economically disadvantaged students, English Language Learners, and African American and Hispanic students all rank well below the school’s overall statewide percentiles. On the positive side, graduation rates have climbed steadily since 2022–2023 to 90.6%, and special education students perform relatively well. For parents, Hoggard offers a well-rounded, above-average large-school education, with room to improve attendance and close internal gaps.

I find it very surprising how the teachers speak to the children. Heard a teacher tell a child last friday while checking my daughters out of school for a family emergency. The teacher told the child "get to class.. The child said ok I'm going..not disrespect. The teacher's response.. I don't want too hear nothing from you just go to class.. As the child left.. The teacher accompanied by 3 female students says he get on my nerves can't stand him , they all begain to laugh. I was standing in the hall right outside the main office. They passed by me the teacher look at me spoke like I did not just see &hear.. What I saw & heard. My thoughts were... Why would she say that in front of his class mates & peers.teachers can be unprofessional. Close Quote
