Summary

Vanceboro-Farm Life Elementary is a PK–5 school in the small eastern North Carolina town of Vanceboro, serving 494 students in the Craven County Board of Education. The school currently holds a 1-star rating and ranks in the 15th percentile of North Carolina elementary schools — a steep fall from its 4-star, 70th-percentile standing in 2016–2017. Nearly all students (98%) are eligible for free or reduced-price lunch, but unlike some similarly high-poverty schools, test scores here have remained below district and state averages across most grades and subjects.

On state tests, the widest gaps are in 4th grade math and 5th grade reading, where proficiency runs about 20 points lower than the state average. By contrast, nearby schools serving virtually the same percentage of low-income students show much stronger results: Chicod (in Pitt County Schools) and Chocowinity Primary (in Beaufort County Schools) both rank in the top 10% statewide despite poverty rates near 99%. Even within the Craven County Board of Education, Albert H Bangert Elementary earns 4 stars, while schools like Oaks Road Academy and J.T. Barber Elementary are lower-performing. This wide range shows that demographics alone don't determine academic success.

There are genuine strengths to build on. Chronic absenteeism has dropped from 32.5% in 2021–2022 to 15.9% in 2024–2025, better than both the district and the state. The school has also hit bright spots: in 2023–2024, 5th grade math proficiency reached 66.7%, exceeding the district and state averages, and the school as a whole earned 4 stars in 2016–2017. However, attendance gains haven't yet translated into overall achievement, and proficiency tends to drop sharply between 3rd and 4th grade. For parents, this suggests that while early-grade foundations are relatively solid, 4th and 5th grade math and reading need extra attention — and sustained schoolwide support — to lift the school back to where it has proven it can be.
