Summary

Albert H Bangert Elementary is a K–5 public school in New Bern, North Carolina, serving 446 students as part of the Craven County Board of Education district. The school holds a 4-star SchoolDigger rating and ranks in the 82nd percentile statewide — 273rd out of 1,492 North Carolina elementary schools — placing it well above its own district, which sits at only the 42nd percentile. What makes this especially remarkable is that nearly 99% of Bangert's students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, making it one of the highest-poverty schools in the area, yet it outperforms the district in every tested subject and grade level and beats the state average in nearly every category.

Bangert's strongest results appear in the early grades: roughly 85% of third graders are proficient in math and 69% in reading. Performance dips somewhat by fifth grade, particularly in math, where 60.3% proficiency falls just below the state average. Fifth-grade science, however, is a clear strength at 79.4% proficiency, well above district and state averages. The school has historically performed even higher, ranking among the top 100–140 schools statewide from 2021 to 2024 before settling into its current top-18% position. Subgroup data shows some unevenness worth watching: low-income student rankings have slipped from the 91st to the 70th percentile over the past two years, and gifted-student rankings fell sharply to the 28th percentile in the most recent data.

One of Bangert's most defining advantages is attendance. Its chronic absenteeism rate is just 9.7%, less than half the district rate of 18.7% and below the state's 24.2%. For a school with nearly universal economic disadvantage, this is highly unusual, and it contrasts sharply with nearby high-poverty schools like Bridgeton Elementary (23%), J.T. Barber Elementary (20.7%), and Oaks Road Academy (19.5%). Only two nearby schools rank higher statewide — Creekside Elementary and W. Jesse Gurganus Elementary — and both serve far more economically advantaged populations. Bangert's combination of excellent attendance, strong early-grade instruction, and consistent science performance makes it an outlier in a positive way among its surrounding schools.
