Summary

Renaissance West STEAM Academy is a Pre-K through 8th grade school in Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools that serves 737 students in one of the highest-poverty areas of Charlotte, with nearly all students eligible for free or reduced-price lunch. The headline story is one of dramatic improvement: as recently as 2020–2021 the school ranked in the bottom 1% of North Carolina schools, but it now sits at the 46th percentile statewide. This upward climb is especially notable compared with nearby schools serving similar populations, as Renaissance West now ranks above Marie G Davis School, Reid Park Academy, Movement Charter School, Steele Creek Preparatory Academy, and East Voyager Academy of Charlotte.

Families will find real academic strengths in the elementary grades, especially in math and science. Math proficiency runs above both district and state averages in grades 3 through 5 — for example, 72.7% of 3rd graders are proficient in math versus 66.4% statewide, and 5th grade science proficiency is 75.8%, also above state averages. The school's most distinctive success, however, is with English Learner students, who rank in the 91st–93rd percentile among all schools in North Carolina — an exceptional result for a school with this poverty profile. Hispanic students rank in the 79th–81st percentile, and African American students also score well above their statewide peers.

The challenges are just as clear, though. Reading lags behind state averages at every grade level, with 3rd grade reading at 36.8% proficiency versus 55.6% statewide. Middle school math is the steepest concern: proficiency falls from 71.2% in 5th grade to just 13.4% by 8th grade, compared with 53.0% statewide. Chronic absenteeism has improved markedly from 50.5% a few years ago but remains high at 35.2%, and it likely limits further growth. Overall, Renaissance West is a school on a genuine upward trajectory that is currently strongest in elementary math and science, and especially effective for underserved student groups — but families should weigh its literacy gaps and the middle school math decline carefully.
