Summary

Movement Charter School is a K–8 charter school in Charlotte, NC, serving 625 students as part of the Movement Freedom charter network. The school serves an extremely high-need community — roughly 99.5% of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, among the highest poverty rates in the immediate area. Movement currently ranks in the 14th percentile statewide (1,285th of 1,492 schools), and that ranking has been unstable: it sat at the 46th percentile in 2023–2024, collapsed to the 4th percentile in 2024–2025, and has only partially recovered since.

Academically, the school shows an unusual split by grade and subject. Third-grade math is a bright spot, with 75% of students proficient versus 66.4% statewide. Eighth grade is also strong: reading proficiency (57.1%) edges out the state average (56.1%), and science proficiency (85.7%) far exceeds both the state average (68.6%) and every nearby K–8 school in the comparison group. The middle elementary grades, however, are major weaknesses — only 25% of 4th graders and 21.2% of 5th graders are proficient in math, among the lowest rates in the area. Subgroup data shows recent declines, especially for male students (7th percentile statewide) and low-income students (18th percentile), though African American students ranked at the 78th percentile statewide as recently as 2023–2024.

The clearest differentiator is chronic absenteeism: 45.3% in 2024–2025, the highest in the immediate area and well above the state average of 24.2%. Several nearby schools serve equally high-poverty populations yet achieve better results — Oaklawn Language Academy sits at the 79th percentile with just 13.9% chronic absenteeism, Allenbrook Elementary at the 64th percentile, and Ashley Park PreK-8 School at the 51st percentile. Movement currently ranks just ahead of Bruns Avenue Elementary (1st percentile), Marie G Davis School (8th percentile), and Thomasboro Academy (13th percentile). Poverty alone does not explain Movement's standing; the most visible difference is attendance, and improving it must be the school's first priority.

I think Movement is an excellent school that teachers leadership. The staff really pour into the children and don't just treat them like another number. I loved best that in his formative years, my son had teachers that looked just like him that weren't just coaches. What I disliked about the school was that the testing scores do rank low and I don't feel like my son was pushed to his best abilities education wise. But otherwise I have no complaints.
