Summary

Movement Charter School is an elementary school serving 745 students in grades K-8 in the 28208 zip code of Charlotte, North Carolina. The school is part of the Movement Charter School District, which is ranked 191 out of 242 districts in the state and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Despite serving a high-needs student population, with 97.58% of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch, Movement Charter School consistently underperforms compared to the state and Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools district averages across various grade levels and subject areas. In the 2024-2025 school year, the school's proficiency rates in Math and Reading were significantly lower than the state and district averages, with some grades performing 30-40 percentage points below. The school has consistently ranked in the bottom quarter of North Carolina elementary schools, with a ranking between 809 and 1424 out of 1490-1514 schools over the past 5 years.

While the overall student population at Movement Charter School struggles academically, the school's African American students perform relatively better compared to their peers at the school. For example, in 2023-2024, the school's African American students ranked 201 out of 924 NC elementary schools, earning a 4-star rating. This suggests there may be promising practices or programs in place that could be leveraged to improve outcomes for the broader student population. However, the extremely high percentage of students qualifying for free/reduced lunch at Movement Charter School indicates the school serves a community with significant economic challenges, which likely contributes to the school's academic struggles and underscores the need for targeted, well-resourced interventions.

Open Quote I think Movement is an excellent school that teachers leadership. The staff really pour into the children and don't just treat them like another number. I loved best that in his formative years, my son had teachers that looked just like him that weren't just coaches. What I disliked about the school was that the testing scores do rank low and I don't feel like my son was pushed to his best abilities education wise. But otherwise I have no complaints. They have an abundance of resources. Close Quote
