Summary

Berewick Elementary is a public elementary school in Charlotte, North Carolina, serving grades PK-5 with a total enrollment of 771 students. The school is part of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools district, which is ranked 119 out of 242 districts in the state.

Berewick Elementary has consistently ranked in the bottom half of North Carolina elementary schools over the past decade, with proficiency rates in Math and Reading that are 5-20 percentage points lower than the district and state averages. The school's performance is particularly weak in Reading, with proficiency rates ranging from 33.9% to 49.6% across grades, compared to 46.5% to 57.8% for the district and 46.7% to 58.1% for the state. The school's high percentage of students from low-income families, with 99.61% qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch, likely contributes to these academic challenges.

While Berewick Elementary's performance is generally lower than the district and state averages, some nearby schools, such as Winget Park Elementary and Southwest Charlotte STEM Academy, have demonstrated stronger academic results. This suggests that there may be successful practices or approaches at these schools that could potentially be replicated at Berewick Elementary. Additionally, the relatively lower per-student spending and slightly lower student-teacher ratio at Berewick Elementary compared to some nearby schools may be factors to consider in understanding the school's performance challenges.

Open Quote I had my child in a magnet school for a few years before putting her into Berewick Elementary. She loves it and wants to stay until 5th grade even though there are other options nearby. I'm happy with the school because the teachers show that they truly care about the children. Her teachers are responsive to my calls and emails and are good at what they do. The principal and vice principal are also attentive and approachable. My child has learned so much while at this school and her confidence has also increased. Thank you, Berewick, for all of your hard work and truly caring about the children in our community. Close Quote

Open Quote You are flawed in using the fact that they have 39 full time teachers and dividing that into the number of students. Class size is more like 20 to 23 students with very little assistance for the EC children Close Quote
