Summary

Berewick Elementary is a PreK-5 school in southwest Charlotte serving 717 students as part of Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools. The school is on an upward trajectory, climbing from the 14th percentile statewide in 2023-24 to the 34th percentile in 2025-26, though it has not yet fully recovered to its pre-pandemic standing around the 50th percentile. Berewick serves a very high-need population — roughly 99.6% of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, matching nearly every surrounding CMS elementary school. Chronic absenteeism has improved for four consecutive years, falling from 31.1% in 2021-22 to 25.3% in 2024-25, better than the district average of 26.8%.

Academically, the picture is mixed. Third-grade math is a bright spot: 74.4% proficiency in 2025-26, above both district (70.7%) and state (66.4%) averages, and second only to Winget Park among nearby schools. But math proficiency drops sharply in upper grades — 48.8% in 4th grade and 50.8% in 5th grade, both far below district averages. Reading is the school's biggest challenge, with proficiency below the district in all tested grades. Among the cluster of high-poverty schools in southwest Charlotte, Berewick ranks in the upper tier — above Reid Park, Nations Ford, South Pine, Berryhill, and Steele Creek Preparatory Academy, while trailing Lake Wylie, Renaissance West STEAM Academy, Steele Creek Elementary, and Southwest Charlotte STEM Academy.

Results for student subgroups are genuinely mixed. Low-income students, African American students, and English learners have performed at or above their statewide comparison groups in recent years, and gifted students have improved sharply. Special education students, however, remain the most persistently low-performing subgroup. Berewick also spends less per student ($8,840) than every nearby comparable school, including Reid Park ($13,382), Berryhill ($12,434), and Lake Wylie ($10,023). The overall direction is positive, but sustaining early-grade gains through upper elementary — especially in reading — will be key.

I had my child in a magnet school for a few years before putting her into Berewick Elementary. She loves it and wants to stay until 5th grade even though there are other options nearby. I'm happy with the school because the teachers show that they truly care about the children. Her teachers are responsive to my calls and emails and are good at what they do. The principal and vice principal are also attentive and approachable. My child has learned so much while at this school and her confidence has also increased. Thank you, Berewick, for all of your hard work and truly caring about the children in our community. Close Quote

You are flawed in using the fact that they have 39 full time teachers and dividing that into the number of students. Class size is more like 20 to 23 students with very little assistance for the EC children Close Quote
