Summary

McDowell High School is a public high school in Marion, North Carolina, serving 1,384 students in grades 9-12. The school is part of the McDowell County Schools district, which is ranked 98 out of 242 districts in the state and has a 3-star rating from SchoolDigger.

While McDowell High School has shown some success in supporting its homeless student population, the school has consistently underperformed compared to the state and district averages on End-of-Course (EOC) exams. Its four-year graduation rate, though improving, still lags behind the state average. The school's statewide ranking has also declined over the years, placing it in the bottom third of high schools in North Carolina. In contrast, the nearby McDowell Early College and McDowell Academy for Innovation consistently outperform McDowell High School on academic measures.

Despite the school's higher-than-average spending per student and relatively low student-teacher ratio, the data suggests the need for a comprehensive review of McDowell High School's instructional practices, resource allocation, and support systems for disadvantaged students. Addressing these challenges will be crucial for improving the educational outcomes and opportunities for the students at this school.

Open Quote The school is often covered with tobacco the students don't respect the teachers. Also the teachers are often more concerned about the students liking them and not worrying about whether or not the students are actually learning anything. Also trying to get something done about disrespectful students is almost impossible. If I write a student up for using inappropriate language or for not doing their work nothing is done. Although the teachers are not the only ones with issues trying to get children disciplined. Bus drivers are always writing someone up but it seems to be taken as a joke. This is the worst school I have ever seen. Close Quote
