Summary

Eastfield Global Magnet School in Marion, NC, serves 279 students in Pre-K through 5th grade as part of McDowell County Schools. Nearly 98% of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, a level of poverty shared by every neighboring McDowell County elementary school. The district ranks 103rd of 246 in North Carolina, and Eastfield sits at the 46th percentile statewide (2 stars), after holding a high-50s to low-60s percentile ranking for four consecutive years.

Recent test results make the school look like two different places depending on grade. Third-grade reading proficiency was just 28.2%, about 27 points below the state, and 3rd-grade math fell to 41%. In the same year, however, 4th-grade math (73.2%) and 5th-grade math (70.7%) beat district and state averages, while 5th-grade science hit 85.4% — tying for the strongest score among nearby McDowell County elementary schools. Those strong upper-grade results suggest the low 3rd-grade scores are a cohort-specific struggle, not a school-wide falloff, since 3rd-grade math had been in the mid-60s for the two previous years. Eastfield's overall state ranking now trails Old Fort Elementary School and Marion Elementary School, which posted strong scores across nearly all grades.

The school's record with high-needs students has been a standout: low-income students ranked in the mid-to-high 80s statewide for two straight years, and English learner and special education students have also performed well above average. Science is a consistent strength, exceeding the state average each year. The biggest concerns are chronic absenteeism, at 29.2% in 2024-25 versus 26.5% for the district and 24.2% for the state, and a recent weakening in subgroup results. Absenteeism is about double the rate at Glen Alpine Elementary and W A Young Elementary, similar high-poverty schools in nearby Burke County. On the plus side, Eastfield has a 13.2 student-teacher ratio, the lowest among its McDowell County comparison schools. Bottom line: upper-grade math and science are genuine strengths, but early literacy and attendance will determine whether the school returns to its recent higher rankings.

Open Quote This school has went downhill in recent years. The principal Michelle Baker has poor communication skills, and no compassion for the children of this school. I'm very disappointed with the treatment of my child at this facility. Close Quote
