Selma Middle School

Selma Middle School is a public school in Selma, NC, serving about 339 students in grades 6–8 as part of Johnston County Public Schools, situated about 30 miles southeast of Raleigh. The school serves an extremely high-need community: about 99% of students qualified for free or reduced-price lunch in 2024-25. Academically, Selma has struggled for years. Attendance and achievement are closely tied, and a third of the student body missing substantial school time makes it very hard to improve outcomes.

Selma also isn't resource-starved. With a 9.9-to-1 student-teacher ratio, it has much smaller classes than the middle schools around it — several nearby schools run at 16 to 19 students per teacher — and per-pupil spending has historically run at or above neighboring schools. This suggests that additional money and staff alone won't turn the school around. There are some encouraging signs: 8th-grade science proficiency has come close to the district average, and some individual student groups have shown meaningful gains recently. But until attendance, teaching quality, and school culture improve, Selma will most likely keep trailing schools that face the same challenges and get better results.
