Summary

Cooper Academy is an elementary school located in Clayton, North Carolina, serving grades PK-5 with a total enrollment of 441 students. It is part of the Johnston County Public Schools district.

Cooper Academy has consistently ranked in the bottom half of North Carolina elementary schools, with academic performance generally below the district and state averages across grade levels and subject areas, particularly in reading. The school's 3rd-grade reading proficiency rates have ranged from 33.3% to 42% over the past few years, significantly below the district and state averages. However, the school appears to be doing a relatively better job in supporting the academic achievement of its African American, Hispanic, and English Language Learner students compared to the state averages for those subgroups.

Several nearby schools, such as Thanksgiving Elementary, Riverwood Elementary, and Powhatan Elementary, consistently outperform Cooper Academy on academic measures and have higher rankings within the state, despite serving similar student populations in terms of socioeconomic status. Additionally, Cooper Academy's ranking and star rating from SchoolDigger have steadily declined over the past 10 years, indicating a concerning trend of worsening academic outcomes.

Open Quote Absolutely horrible. Place feels like a prison. New principal is a joke. No leadership. Do not attend this school if one of the local charter schools works for you. Close Quote

Open Quote Teachers are too busy trying to make friends with each other and the parents instead of teach the children. They care to much about what everyone thinks about them personally. If they put that much effort into teaching the students the rating for the school would go up and the kids would do better. They treat it like a popularity contest Close Quote
