Despite its high poverty rate and limited resources, Hertford County Early College stands out as one of the strongest high schools in northeastern North Carolina. In the most recent year, it ranked 225th of 662 high schools statewide (66th percentile), while the district itself ranks in the lower fourth of the state. The school beat district and state averages in every End-of-Course subject, with Math III as a standout: 98.1% of students were proficient, compared to 68.9% statewide. Its results also far surpass nearby Hertford County High, where English II proficiency was 35.5% versus 67.2% here, and Biology was 26.9% versus 58.6%. It also outperforms Gates County Senior High in every subject, even though Gates County serves far fewer low-income students.
