George C Simkins Junior Elementary

George C Simkins Junior Elementary is a PK–5 school in east Greensboro, NC, serving 588 students in Guilford County Schools, where 99.5% of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. After three consecutive years stuck in the bottom 7% of North Carolina elementary schools, Simkins made a substantial jump to the 24th percentile in the most recent state rankings. Third grade math rose from 49.5% to 64.4% proficient in a single year, while third grade reading jumped from 31.2% to 50.0%. The school now meets or exceeds the district average in both 3rd and 4th grade math—an uncommon achievement for a school serving this many economically disadvantaged students.

Simkins's improvement becomes even more striking when compared with nearby schools. It now outperforms several high-poverty neighbors, including Washington Elementary, Gillespie Park Elementary, and Waldo C Falkener Senior Elementary—and it does so while carrying larger class sizes and lower per-student spending than most of them. Yet Alamance Elementary and Bluford Elementary, two equally high-poverty schools just a couple of miles away, still outpace Simkins by a wide margin; both have chronic absenteeism rates near 20%, while Simkins sits at 35.1%. The school also loses ground in upper elementary: 5th grade scores fall roughly 20 points below district averages in reading and science, meaning gains made in 3rd and 4th grade are not yet carrying through to 5th grade.

English Learner students at Simkins jumped to the 70th percentile statewide, a 4-star result and a major bright spot. But male students, special education students, and students with low socioeconomic status continue to score well below state averages. With more than one in three students chronically absent, improving attendance could be one of the most powerful levers available. Simkins is clearly moving in the right direction; the next challenge is sustaining that momentum into upper elementary, closing the gap with its higher-performing high-poverty neighbors, and lifting the student groups still being left behind.
