Summary

Brooks Global Elementary is a K–5 public school in Greensboro, NC, serving 314 students as part of Guilford County Schools. The district overall ranks well below the state median, but Brooks is a clear bright spot — it currently holds a 4-star rating and ranks #327 of 1,492 North Carolina elementary schools, placing it in the 78th percentile. Among nearby elementary schools in the same district, only Sternberger Elementary (96th percentile) ranks higher. General Greene Elementary is nearly comparable at the 77th percentile, but most other nearby schools trail considerably.

What really sets Brooks apart is its students' consistent attendance and solid academic performance. The chronic absenteeism rate at Brooks is just 6.9%, compared to 29.2% across Guilford County and 24.2% statewide. In the most recent testing year, Brooks beat the district average in every subject and grade, and topped the state average in six of seven subject/grade combinations. Third-grade reading, fifth-grade math, and fifth-grade reading were especially strong — running roughly 15 to 19 points above the state in the upper grades. Most nearby schools report chronic absenteeism between 20% and 38%, making Brooks' attendance record a remarkable strength.

While Brooks has been a high-performing school for years, its statewide ranking has slipped gradually — from a 5-star, top-100 school in the late 2010s to a 4-star school in the upper quartile today. Two internal trends are worth noting: identified gifted/talented students have ranked in the low-to-mid 20s percentile statewide for three years running, and male students have declined from the 80th to the 61st percentile over that same period. Even so, actual proficiency levels remain strong — in 2024–25, third-grade reading hit 71.4% proficiency versus 45% for the district — suggesting the school continues to serve its students well despite demographic shifts and changes in how schools are compared.

Open Quote The third grade year is horrible at this school. The teachers are poor but the principal won't accept any constructive criticism of his program. if you have problems (as most of my friends did) then it must be your child's fault he thinks. Especially if you have a child with mild special needs (ADD, ADHD, Aspergers) do not send your children here. This school will make their behaviors worse rather than better. Your kids will not be treated as individuals and no one will be willing to listen if you have suggestions. Close Quote
