Summary

Butner-Stem Elementary is a PK-5 public school in Butner, NC, serving 476 students as part of the Granville County Schools district, where nearly all students (99.4%) qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. For most of the past five years, the school performed near the middle of the pack statewide, but it experienced a sharp academic downturn in the most recent school year. Its overall state ranking plunged from the 45th percentile to the 24th percentile in a single year—a drop of about 20 percentage points—earning just one star. That decline stands out because nearby schools in the same district, including Wilton Elementary and Tar River Elementary, either improved or held steady over the same period.

The most striking weakness is in 3rd grade: only 23.3% of 3rd graders were proficient in math and 26% in reading—roughly 30 to 60 points below nearby schools such as Mangum Elementary and Mount Energy Elementary in 3rd grade math. The drop-off affected nearly every student group, and gifted students ranked at just the 2nd percentile, suggesting limited opportunities for advanced learners. There are, however, bright spots in upper elementary: 4th graders posted strong math scores (65.7%)—above both district and state averages—and 5th grade science scores also topped the district, which shows the school can achieve solid results in certain grades and subjects.

Butner-Stem also spends less per student ($9,817) than neighboring schools and maintains a higher student-teacher ratio. The encouraging rebound of the current 4th grade cohort—after a very weak 3rd grade year—suggests targeted intervention can work. With an exceptionally low-performing 3rd grade class moving up next year, the school's immediate priority is clear: focus on early literacy and math foundations, and identify what helped the current 4th graders recover so it can be replicated.
